Service Learning
Service is an integral part of the ICS mission and experience. At ICS, students learn how to serve and transform their communities. As students grow in their Christian worldview, they learn how to model Christ in creation care and in caring for those in need. Service Learning connects classroom learning with service opportunities in the wider Hong Kong Community and in other countries through weekly service programs and Secondary School events like Week without Walls.
In Hong Kong, all students are able to engage in a wide variety of service opportunities, such as: visiting the elderly; feeding the homeless; supporting people with disabilities; writing to those in prison, compiling Christmas boxes, and tutoring children from poorer families and ethnically diverse groups. There are also a number of annual special projects that include Beach Cleanups, visits to Crossroads, Domestic Worker Open Day, and World Vision 30-Hour Famine, to name a few. In High School, students take on more personal responsibility for leading and developing service activities through leading these events, the Make a Difference Projects, and service clubs. As the ICS Motto says: ICS = Instruction for Life, Commitment to Christ, and Service to the Community.
Fine and Performing Arts
Fine and Performing Arts is valued at ICS because it is integral to the human experience and uniquely mirror God's creative image. A practical and challenging curriculum in Fine and Performing Arts provides students with an avenue for expressing creativity, beauty, and spirituality. The students are also given an opportunity to identify, develop, and celebrate their God-given abilities. The Fine and Performing Arts Department offers a wide range of courses in four diverse areas: Visual Art, Theater Art, Music, and Media Studies.
Drama:
Drama enriches us spiritually, emotionally, physically, and intellectually. It fosters creativity, teaches discipline, inspires self-confidence, and encourages cooperation. The ICS drama department places equal value on the learning process and performance. Our classes and co-curricular activities are open to all students who want to develop a lifelong appreciation of the arts and explore their potential. The program stresses the importance of these dramatic and presentation skills across all subject areas, not simply the stage.
Music:
Music enriches us spiritually, emotionally, physically, and intellectually. It fosters creativity, teaches discipline, and encourages cooperation. The ICS music department places equal value on the learning process and performance. Our classes and co-curricular activities are open to all students who want to develop a lifelong appreciation of music and explore their potential as musicians.
Physical Education
At the core of Health and Physical Education is the acquisition of movement skills and concepts to enable students to participate in a range of physical activities – confidently, competently, and creatively. As a foundation for lifelong physical activity participation and enhanced performance, students acquire an understanding of how the body moves and develop positive attitudes toward physical activity participation. They develop an appreciation of the significance of physical activity, outdoor recreation, and sport in Hong Kong society and globally. Movement is a powerful medium for learning through which students can practice and refine personal, behavioral, social, and cognitive skills.
Health and Physical Education provides students with a contemporary, relevant, challenging, and physically active experiential curriculum.
Fine Arts
Our art program culminates in Advanced Placement Studio Art (AP Art), available to seniors who have taken specific prerequisite courses. In AP art, students can create individual portfolios based on the media of their choice, whether a series of paintings, photographs, or designs created entirely on a computer. The AP portfolio is a wonderful opportunity for students to build art rooted in personal inspiration. Teacher input is given, but for the first time in their artistic career, students are not given assignments but rather free to create for themselves.
Students who have come out of the ICS program have gone on to some of the most prestigious art schools in the world, including Parsons the New School for Design, Rhode Island School of Design, Central St. Martins College of Art & Design, Art Center College of Design, and Savannah College of Art and Design.
PROGRAMS
STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics)
STEM education is central to the ICS curriculum, with a high proportion of our graduates attending the most prestigious global universities to pursue related fields. Our accelerated pathways allow students with God-given talent to advance in Mathematics to the fullest of their potential. Math is the foundation of problem-solving and the ‘Engineering mindset”.
Students can gain university-level credit in the Natural Sciences: Physics, Chemistry, and Biology, as they learn the laboratory skills and collaborative teamwork necessary to success. Design thinking is introduced at an early stage in the Middle School in specialist classes, and there are numerous opportunities for internal and external societies, clubs, and competitions. Students are well-equipped with the knowledge and skills to thrive in a dynamic, technology-driven future
MA ON SHAN CAMPUS
Kindergarten is a child’s entrance into education. ICS Kindergarten provides students with a rigorous and nurturing educational experience. Our students learn to be self-reliant and independent and to care for those around them. Most importantly, students learn the love of Jesus as they learn to navigate and interact with the world around them.
SHEK MUN CAMPUS
ICS seeks to develop individuals who are critical thinkers, resilient learners, and effective communicators. Our students seek God’s truth as they view and navigate the world around them with empathy and compassion. Faculty and staff create an environment of trust, care, and the love of Jesus Christ where students are nurtured physically, socially, emotionally, and spiritually. Students develop their identity and resilient Christian character through academic, spiritual, and social-emotional instruction.
During middle school, students experience many physical, emotional, and social changes as they transition from childhood to adolescence. Students are learning to deepen their thinking skills, explore who they are, and learn how to develop more independence. Here at ICS, we view the middle school years as a time of growth and opportunity as we support students through these formative experiences.
At ICS, students receive a well-rounded education and are required to earn credits in a full range of subjects. Within these parameters, student choice is facilitated and encouraged so that students develop further in their individual areas of interest and strength.
The Bridges Program is designed for students aged 11-18 who have significant special learning needs, including areas related to communications, social and emotional interaction, or physical and sensory challenges. Students within the Bridges program require the application of an alternative curriculum, an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), and a non-standard course of study for inclusion in routine school and community activities, and to prepare them for developmentally appropriate independence.
